About This Quote

This quote is actually a poem by the poet Paul Laurence Dunbar. Dunbar was born in 1872 in slavery in Ohio. At the age of twenty he wrote the poem “We Wear the Mask” in which he advocated equal rights for all people, but advocated freedom for black people. This is one of the most notable statements to come out of the Civil Rights Movement because it was Dunbar who began to create a new consciousness about black people in America. It also gave people insight into what our culture could be if we were all taught how to deal with our impulses.
